Bill Knight, the president of the City of London Law Society, is to chair the panel of judges for the British Legal Awards 2008, which are launched by Legal Week today (5 June).

Knight, who also chairs the Financial Reporting Review Panel and is deputy chairman of the council at Lloyd’s of London, will lead a heavyweight panel of judges made up of general counsel, business figures and commentators.

Judges this year include Anthony Cann, former Linklaters senior partner and a non-executive director of Smith News and Panmure Gordon; Miller McLean, group secretary and general counsel at The Royal Bank of Scotland Group; and John Aiello, general counsel of Goldman Sachs’ private equity group.

Knight’s appointment underlines the independence of the judging process for the British Legal Awards, which are now in their second year and set out to raise the profile of commercial lawyers in the wider business community.

The deadline for entries this year is 11 September and the awards ceremony will be held on 26 November. Among new categories for 2008 is one recognising the growing importance of corporate social responsibility programmes.
