Romania joins the European Union (EU) in January 2007 – adding a significant 22 million new citizens to the EU, and a young, highly-educated workforce. Confidence is high among Bucharest’s legal workforce, with well-respected boutique firms forming out of the more established outfits of the likes of Nestor Nestor Diculescu Kingston Petersen and Musat & Asociatii.

For the 50 lawyers at Bucharest’s Tuca Zbarcea & Asociatii, the country’s imminent accession to the world’s largest economic union creates opportunities. Having split from Musat last year, taking across 22 lawyers, including eight partners, the firm has doubled in size and its focus has widened from the original concentration on M&A, privatisations banking and energy – all in the space of just over a year.
