The Bond Market Association (BMA) announced last week that it is to merge with the European High Yield Association (EHYA) in a move that will be closely watched by debt lawyers.

Latham & Watkins partner Bryant Edwards, chair of the EHYA, will continue as head of the unified association when it officially launches on 1 January, 2006. The move will see BMA, which represents the debt securities market, work hand-in-hand with the EHYA, which represents high yield underwriters, investors, issuers and managers. The EHYA was only set up in 2001.
