Secondments to clients have become a popular way of developing client relationships for law firms, but it is wise to bear in mind that secondments come in all shapes and sizes and for different levels of seniority.

A straw poll of member firms in the multi-firm legal education and training group has revealed several trends. Firstly, secondments are mostly instigated by clients, but some law firms do take the lead in suggesting them from time to time. Secondly, many law firms have regular secondments to specific clients as part of their scheme of working together. Finally, there is no rule of thumb about the seniority of secondees – they range from trainees to partners.
