The Government has appointed Sir Nigel Wicks, a former Treasury permanent secretary, as the first chairman of the selection panel for the new Judicial Appointments Commission (JAC).

Wicks, who is currently a non-executive director of Morgan Stanley, takes up the role in place of first-choice chair Dame Rennie Fritchie. She was originally appointed last year but stood down before taking up the position after her role as Commissioner for Public Appointments was extended for a second term. Wicks will be joined on the three-member selection panel by the Lord Chief Justice, Lord Woolf, and another person, whom Wicks will appoint himself.
