Our 12th annual survey on the state of industrial relations in the UK has thrown up what some might surprisingly say is an unusual good news message. Our survey year in terms of data collection runs from July 2003 to July 2004 and provides an interesting contrast to the nationally available statistics which tend to be collated through the normal calendar year.

The past 12 months have shown a decline in industrial action affecting employers as a whole, with a further polarisation of disruptive activity affecting the public sector in particular. For the vast majority of private sector employers, there has been a decline in the level of industrial action and balloting for industrial action.
