It was received wisdom among many in the Inns of Court that the advent of compulsorily funded pupil-lages from January 2003 would severely hit the numbers of those starting careers at the Bar.
The talk was that chambers would baulk at the £10,000 that the Bar Council now requires them to provide for minimum pupil support.
