How do women fare at the Bar of England and Wales? Bar Council statistics for December 2002 show the sexes entering the profession in equal numbers. The number of men and women in pupillage was 53% and 47% respectively, and the proportion of ethnic minorities, at 20%, was high.
As for the gender/ethnic breakdown of the profession in December 2002, the Bar in private practice had some 72% men and 28% women, and 9.66% ethnic minorities. At the employed Bar, the sexes are more balanced: 58% men and 42% women, and 15% ethnic minorities.
