Sullivan & Cromwell’s Paris arm has stolen a march on Freshfields Bruckhaus Deringer after being called in to help advise the London giant’s client Alcan Aluminium on its $3.9bn hostile takeover bid for French rival, The Pechiney Group.

The leading New York firm is working alongside Linklaters’ Paris branch, which is advising the Canadian giant’s financial adviser, Morgan Stanley, on the rare hostile takeover bid, which promises to generate a fee bonanza for an array of top international and French firms.
