There are a number of things that are surprising about automobile drivers and insurance coverage in Alabama. First, 22 percent of Alabama drivers do not have mandatory liability insurance. Second, it has only been since 2000 that the state’s drivers have been required to have liability coverage. And third, there are five other states with more uninsured drivers than Alabama.
