Cheddar Inc. has named Anjali Kumar general counsel and chief people officer.

The New York-based post-cable network, founded by former BuzzFeed executive Jon Steinberg and dubbed “the CNBC for millennials,” has hired Kumar to oversee the company’s legal functions, along with people operations, talent acquisition, performance management, compensation and benefits and learning and development, according to a press release issued Monday.

Kumar will be Cheddar’s first general counsel, according to a Monday LinkedIn post from Steinberg. He wrote that he worked with Kumar at Google and thinks she will help build out “a world-class executive team.”

Kumar, a Google Inc. and Warby Parker veteran, will be “primarily focused on further accelerating the already rapid pace of Cheddar video distribution deals with [multichannel video programming distributor] MVPD and digital platforms,” Cheddar announced.

“Cheddar is one of the most innovative companies in media and I am thrilled to be joining an A+ team at this point in their growth trajectory” Kumar said in a statement. “Strong cultures and companies are built on a foundation of great people and I look forward to helping take both the people and legal functions to the next level. The company is a deal machine, and I worked with Jon before at Google, so look for us to move even faster in contracting distribution.”

Kumar most recently served as Warby Parker’s founding general counsel and head of social innovation. Prior to her tenure with the eyewear retailer from 2013-16, Kumar worked as senior counsel for six years at Google.

Kumar was not immediately available for comment.

At Cheddar, Kumar will report to president and chief operating officer Eric Harris. In a LinkedIn postMonday, Harris wrote: “Having known Anjali for more than three years since we met at Spark Camp, I couldn’t be more excited to find someone so uniquely qualified for this critical role.”
