Canada will make it easier for foreigners to work in their country and bring needed business-tech skills to the growing economy.

Under a new system which will start next year, people who want to immigrate into Canada will make an online profile on a website. “Based on this profile and the education of those who apply, we will rank them,” Chris Alexander, Canada’s minister for Immigration and Citizenship, told Business Today. “After this we will invite these professionals. Once they complete their applications, we will process their papers within six months.”

The new program comes in Canada as the United States makes it harder for someone to get an H-1B visa. H-1B visas let U.S. employers hire temporary foreign workers in select fields. The H-1B visa program applies to employers seeking to hire nonimmigrant aliens as workers in specialty occupations or as fashion models of distinguished merit and ability.

On the other hand, Canada will make it easier for certain immigrants to come into the nation, especially when there is a need for employees with specific professional backgrounds. For instance, Canada has begun recruiting tech professionals from Silicon Valley.

“The decision of the American government to limit the number of visas under H-1B visa is certainly helping us to attract talent, and is also assisting the government in attracting new investments,” Alexander said.

As of now, there are about 22,000 Indian students and workers in Canada with temporary status. But they can get permanent status under the new immigration program.

In addition, Canadian employers will be able to review profiles about possible employees from foreign nations, and the process will become quicker, as well.

Among the Canadian cities with the most opportunities for tech specialists are Vancouver, Montreal, Toronto and Alberta. The professions most in demand are scientists, engineers, tech specialists and those with management and math backgrounds.

Last year, it was reported how Jason Kenney, Canadian Immigration Minister, met with business innovators in the United States, as well as students at Stanford University to encourage more immigration into Canada.

Canada has something called an Entrepreneur Start-Up Visa, too, which gives permanent residency for entrepreneurs.

The response has been positive. “Entrepreneurs around the world are excited to hear that Canada has made special provisions for them,” David Cohen, an immigration attorney told CIC News. “I expect this excitement will only build as more and more people hear about this unique opportunity.”

In addition, Canada has in place the Temporary Foreign Worker Program, which recently has been restructured.

“The TFWP helps thousands of workers come to Canada to fill jobs in a variety of sectors,” CIC News reported. “With the implementation of these new changes, the government is working to ensure that the TFWP is flexible enough to respond to the country’s labour needs while ensuring that the rights of both Canadians and foreign workers are sufficiently protected.”
