Suzanne Rich Folsom knows quite a bit about matters of governance, regulation and compliance, and now she brings that expertise to a “historic and iconic American company that has been at the forefront of our country’s development and growth since the turn of the twentieth century,” as she puts it. That company is United States Steel, and the largest steel company in the nation has appointed Folsom to the position of general counsel and senior vice president of governmental affairs.

Folsom brings a range of experience to the role, having most recently served as executive vice president, general counsel and chief compliance officer at ACADEMI LLC. Prior to that, Folsom served as deputy general counsel and chief regulatory and compliance officer at AIG during some of the most difficult times of the U.S. financial crisis.

U.S. Steel’s position as the leader in one of America’s oldest and most important industries was certainly a factor that drew Folsom to this opportunity.

“For the American steel industry, there are a myriad of challenges – domestic and international – for which the company is creating innovative solutions, including transformational initiatives across the organization in order to remain competitive, efficient, and to meet the dynamic needs of its customers into the future,” she says.

This innovation comes from the top, as Folsom will join an executive team that has kept U.S. Steel a leader in the industry.  “The solid leadership team and the talented people of U.S. Steel demonstrate a strong commitment to excellence,” Folsom explains. “I am truly inspired by what U.S. Steel CEO Mario Longhi and his team have already accomplished, and am excited to join this outstanding group in the next chapter of my professional career.”

The excitement is mutual.  “I am delighted to welcome Suzanne to U. S. Steel, where her extensive expertise in corporate and international law, ethics and governance, compliance and government affairs will add immediate value,” Longhi said. “Suzanne has an impressive history of achievement throughout her legal career.  Her demonstrated leadership and business transformation experience make her another excellent addition to the seasoned executive team now developing and leading the Carnegie initiatives that will usher in a new era of profitability for our company.”
