Johnine Barnes


The National Bar Association has a new legal head, as Johnine Barnes has been named the association’s newest general counsel. Barnes currently serves as the chair of the Labor and Employment Practice’s Statutory Compliance and Contracts and Regulatory Practice Group of the international law firm Greenberg Traurig. The National Bar Association, formed in 1925, is the largest associated of African American attorneys and judges in the U.S.

Tom Mackay


Independent brokerage and software group AKJ has named the company’s first general counsel, with Tom Mackay receiving the nod. Mackay formerly served as the head of legal at the London Stock Exchange from 1991 through 1993 before joining Taylor Wessing as a partner, working mainly with London Stock Exchange matters. AKJ says it brought in Mackay primarily to work on regulatory actions surrounding one of its relatively new hedge funds, AKJ Accelerator.

Andrew Powell


Biotechnology company InterMune has appointed Andrew Powell as the company’s executive vice president, general counsel and corporate secretary. Powell has experience working in the life science sector for over 20 years, having most recently served in the same positions at Cornerstone Therapeutics. Powell’s global experience will help as InterMune expands internationally, as he previously led the global law practice at Baxter Bioscience.

Matthew Haies


Matthew Haies has joined 24/7 Media as VP, general counsel. 24/7 Media is a digital marketing technology company that serves advertisers, agencies and digital publishers across the globe. At 24/7 Media, Haies will be in charge of legal services for the company’s 18 offices in 12 different countries. Haies previously worked as general counsel and VP of Privacy Strategy for AppNexus, and he previously served as senior counsel at Google.

Michael Finn


Axalta Coating Systems has named Michael Finn as the company’s senior vice president and general counsel. Finn will also serve on Axalta’s Board of Directors. Finn comes to Axalta from General Dynamics Corp., where he served as vice president and general counsel of the company’s Advanced Information Systems division. Finn also boasts global experience from his time with General Dynamics, having spent three years as director of ethics and export compliance, among other roles, at General Dynamics United Kingdom in London.

Daniel Winslow


As covered on InsideCounsel on Sept. 17, Rimini Street has named Daniel Winslow as the company’s new general counsel ahead of some tough litigation. Rimini Street is embroiled in a legal battle with Oracle over alleged patent infringement. Winslow previously served in the Massachusetts House of Representatives and was mulling a Senate run before taking the job at Rimini Street. Winslow has 30 years of trial experience under his belt.

Nancy Laethem Stern


Electronic trading firm Allston, based in Chicago, has named Nancy Laethem Stern as executive vice president, general counsel and corporate secretary. Stern has spent more than 17 years as both an attorney and partner at Katten Muchin Rosenman and Gardner Carton & Douglas, now part of Drinker Biddle & Reath. Allston also named Jay A. Biondo, who will serve under Stern, as the company’s chief compliance officer.

Ethan Knowlden


BGI-Shenzhen subsidiary Complete Genomics has named Ethan Knowlden as senior vice president, general counsel and secretary of the company. Knowlden previously served as vice president of business development and licensing and corporate counsel at Novartis Vaccines and Diagnostics, Inc. In a press release, Knowlden said, “Whole human genome sequencing will dramatically change the way in which healthcare is practiced in many countries during the next decade and I am delighted to be part of the Complete team at this transformative time.”
