Practice Profile: Shahshahani works in the Southeast to protect the human rights of immigrants and Muslim, Middle Eastern and South Asian communities. She is with the Project South, a nonprofit developing activist strategies to address social issues in the South. At the National Lawyers Guild, she served on international delegations, went to Tunisia and Egypt, monitored Venezuelan and Honduran elections and was on the jury in international people’s tribunals focused on Mexico, the Philippines and Brazil.
Leadership Activity: Shahshahani is on the advisory council of the American Association of Jurists, is co-founder of the Georgia Immigrant and Refugee Rights Coalition and author or editor of several human rights reports, including the 2012 report “Prisons of Profits: Immigrants and Detention in Georgia,” as well as law review articles and book chapters focused on racial profiling, immigrants’ rights and surveillance of Muslim-Americans.
