A flat year? Not so fast. Sure, The Am Law 100 posted only fractional changes in key metrics in 2013—a slight drop in average revenue per lawyer, a small increase in average profits per partner, and a tiny decrease in average compensation–all partners. But the real story is more nuanced, and interesting: It also was a year in which a handful of the richest firms got much richer, the far-flung vereins got much bigger, and almost everyone else struggled just to keep up with inflation.
