As many office workers continue to work from home, businesses of all kind are looking to reduce their rent costs or eliminate them entirely. This could spell disaster for commercial landlords. But with aggressive lawyering, it doesn’t have to.

Back in April, I published an article advising struggling commercial tenants how they may avoid their rent obligations during the COVID-19 pandemic. Most of that advice remains viable today. But eight months later, it’s clear that—with well-drafted leases and aggressive, sophisticated counsel—commercial landlords have many more tools in their arsenal with which they can fight back. The key is using them in the right way.
