Despite concerns raised by the expansion of the Georgia Hidden Predator Act, litigation filed on behalf of survivors of childhood sexual abuse is largely not about money, recent courtroom developments suggest.

The University of Georgia School of Law’s Wilbanks Child Endangerment and Sexual Exploitation Clinic, known as CEASE, was formed to help put lawyers, law students and clients together following the creation of a two-year window for lawsuits to be filed without restrictions from the statute of limitations. That window opened in July 2015 and has since closed. Survivor advocates and trial lawyers tried to strengthen the act further this year but failed amid backlash from organizations who feared financial devastation from lawsuits—including the Catholic church and scouting organizations.
