A group of county officials, business representatives and citizen activists met Tuesday to discuss what they described as a crime wave targeting south Fulton County, particularly the phenomenon dubbed “sliders”—young criminals who slide into the cars of people pumping gas and steal them or snatch whatever they can get.
More than 70 percent of such crimes occurred at only five gas stations in 2016, and among the proposals floated by Commission Chairman John Eaves, Fulton County Police Chief Gary Stile and District Attorney Paul Howard was the creation of a countywide, multijurisdictional police task force to beef up patrols and visibility, the installation of more surveillance cameras and an effort to work with the Legislature to make it more difficult for young repeat offenders to make bond.
