On the morning after Donald Trump’s election victory, Gov. Nathan Deal quietly and without comment named his choices to fill five appellate judicial positions—three on the Georgia Supreme Court and two on the Georgia Court of Appeals.
On Thursday morning, as the president-elect was having his first meeting at the White House, Deal sat down in his office at the Capitol with the Daily Report to talk about the events of the week—along with what he looks for in a judge and what he hopes for in the criminal justice reform movement he launched when he took office in 2011. It’s an effort that has earned recognition for cutting prison costs, inspiring addiction and mental health treatment courts all over the state and helping to train re-entering offenders for jobs.
