The Georgia Trial Lawyers Association announced plans to honor Ken and Beth Melton, the Cobb County couple whose lawsuit found an ignition defect that prompted General Motors to recall millions of cars and Congress and federal regulators to launch investigations.

The group said Monday it will present its Courageous Pursuit of Justice Award to the Meltons on April 30 during a ceremony at the Ritz-Carlton Buckhead. The trial lawyers present the award annually to clients of members who have shown “exceptional bravery in pursuing justice against all odds.” The distinction is also known as the “Nestlehutt Award” for Betty Nestlehutt, whose 2010 state Supreme Court case overturned Georgia’s cap on noneconomic damages in medical malpractice cases.
