Two years after its attempt to avoid controversy over gay marriage backfired, the Georgia Association for Women Lawyers has tentatively agreed to sign onto a brief urging the U.S. Supreme Court to allow same-sex couples to marry.
Subject to its leadership’s review of the brief, which is being prepared by a California law firm on behalf of bar associations and other groups around the country, GAWL’s board on Feb. 13 voted in favor of signing on to the filing, according to GAWL president Cindy Manning. Munger, Tolles & Olson’s brief is expected to address the high court case over whether state law bans on same-sex marriage are unconstitutional. The case, from the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Sixth Circuit, is to be argued in April.
