The U.S. Court of Appeals for the Eleventh Circuit issued a ruling Monday affirming Georgia’s current statewide electoral system despite challenges from Black plaintiffs that it constitutes illegal vote dilution under the Voting Rights Act.

Circuit Judge Elizabeth L. Branch wrote the opinion on appeal from the Northern District of Georgia, finding that the Georgia Public Service Commission’s (PSC) elections are not determined by race as argued by plaintiffs and that the proposed single-member district solution would “impermissibly alter Georgia’s chosen form of government.”
