The practice of law, while less theatrical in some respects, shares many similarities to sports. Although lawyers do not keep formal score, they do compete for negotiating leverage, favorable judicial decisions and other positive outcomes for their clients. Lawyers can glean many helpful lessons from our sports heroes, and this article surveys some of those lessons.
1. Purposeful Practice
Kobe Bryant, considered one of the greatest basketball players of all time, was known for his incredible work ethic and dedication to practice. The Black Mamba, as Bryant was known, built a reputation for arriving at the gym before sunrise, sometimes as early as 4 or 5 in the morning. Practice should be focused on stretching the edges of your current abilities. That is where improvement lies. Just as the sports greats do, lawyers should practice and push their skills to improve every day.
2. Be Adaptable
