Reacting to a current proposal in Washington, D.C., the chief judge for the U.S. District Court for the Southern District of Georgia said its panel-related public defender system is strong as is and doesn’t need to be converted to a federal public defender’s office.
The latter system was tried once in the 1970s and later scrapped, he said.
