News of Justice Stephen Breyer’s retirement quickly spread through legal circles Wednesday, as litigators, his former law clerks and law professors discussed the legacy the jurist will leave behind.

His former clerks called Breyer an open-minded consensus-maker. Litigators called him a key defender of civil rights, especially for the LGBTQ+ community. And law professors said his legal writing will leave a lasting impression on the bench once he steps down.
