For lawyers in private practice, the summer can be a time to manage a caseload, prepare for a busy fall, or enjoy vacation away from the office.  It is also a time when law student summer associates join firms to learn about private practice as part of a campaign for full-time employment.  The summer associate program is a benefit to lawyers who can receive additional assistance from eager students on their matters.  The summer associate program generally also provides an opportunity for social engagement at the firm.

Summer associate programs can also implicate ethical obligations on behalf of the firm and the lawyers who work with summer associates.  Although many firms are hosting their summer associates virtually for the second summer in a row, some ethical considerations are present even in a virtual setting.
