When he stepped into the role of president of the Georgia Association of Criminal Defense Lawyers in January 2020, Lawrence Zimmerman faced a mixed bag of challenges and opportunities: He was cheered by judicial appointments including women and minorities made by Gov. Brian Kemp in his first year in office, but feared the impact of reported plans to cut millions of dollars from the accountability courts championed by former Gov. Nathan Deal as part of his criminal justice reforms. 

Then came COVID-19, and everything changed.
