Former Georgia legislator Deborah Gonzalez’s court battles to reinstate a canceled election paid off Tuesday when she was elected as the state’s first Latina district attorney and the nation’s first female Puerto Rican DA.

“It was hard-fought and very much earned, every step of the way,” Gonzalez said Wednesday. She eked out an 866-vote, runoff victory for the Western Judicial Circuit DA against challenger James Chafin. Gonzalez earned 13,483 votes to Chafin’s 12,617.
