Although all the parties were white, a police shooting case recently decided by Atlanta’s federal appeals court touches on issues that have marked some of the racial justice debates of the past months—such as the proper use of force, the relative danger of Taser stun guns and the benefits and limits of video evidence.

The decision by the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Eleventh Circuit revived claims against an Alabama officer who fatally shot a man resisting arrest for driving without a license. The judges noted that the alleged offense was a particularly low-level misdemeanor and that they didn’t consider the Taser the man was fighting over with officers to be a deadly weapon.
