On behalf of the Georgia Association of Criminal Defense Lawyers, I am writing to extend condolences to the family, friendsand colleagues of Judge Ramón Alvarado on his recent, untimely passing. Ramón was a GACDL member from 2006 until he was appointed to the bench in 2019. We will miss him more than words can say; not only was Ramón a fierce and passionate advocate for his clients, but he was always ready to listen to others and give thoughtful advice. Generous, kind, friendly, eminently capable, passionate, honest, respectful, giving, compassionate; these are just some of the words that describe him. To many he was a friend, a teacher, and a mentor. Those who knew him were better for it.
Until he was appointed to the bench in 2019, Ramón dedicated his career to criminal defense. He began his career with the Troup County Public Defender’s office and then opened his own firm in Lawrenceville, Georgia. His practice focused on DUI cases, and he was awarded the “Outstanding Young Lawyer of the Year” in 2009 by the Defenders of Drinking Drivers Group. He was consistently recognized as a Georgia Super Lawyer. His passion, knowledge, and experience translated to success in the courtroom. As one former prosecutor said in a Facebook post, “juries loved his calm, gentle demeanor.”
