A $1.4 million payment has ended a lawsuit against the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services filed by a doctor who alleged he was denied a promotion at the Centers for Disease Control in Atlanta because of a previous discrimination complaint.

The federal government paid $587,300 in attorney fees, costs and compensatory damages, plus $812,700 as a settlement amount, to Dr. Michael Malison, according to an agreement signed by lawyers on both sides.
