In a year of intensified public scrutiny for the federal courts, one judge in Mississippi recently took the chance to reflect on the deeply un-diverse bench he sits on.
U.S. District Judge Carlton Reeves of the Southern District of Mississippi called the federal judiciary “an institution that fails to reflect the diversity of the public it serves,” adding he believes “particular care” is necessary when selecting officers. The comments came in a June 1 order setting out the process for appointing a receiver in a multimillion-dollar Ponzi scheme case.
