A jury in the rural South Georgia Judicial Circuit town of Camilla, population 5,000, has reached a verdict of $18 million for a man severely injured when a construction company’s dump truck crashed into the back of his tractor.

The verdict came Monday after two hours of deliberation following a week-long trial. Mitchell County Superior Court Judge Heather Lanier issued a final award Tuesday of $20 million with prejudgment interest because the defense had rejected an offer of settlement, according to the winning lawyer, W. Earl McCall of McCall Williams in Albany. However, that judgment will be written down by a previous $5.4 million settlement with the primary insurance company, McCall said, “leaving us with $14.6” against the excess coverage carrier.
