Two Bilzin Sumberg Baena Price & Axelrod litigators—Brandon Rose and Anthony Narula—have joined former colleagues at AXS Law Group, a full-service boutique firm that opened last year.
The new AXS partners said they were drawn by the opportunities offered by the new, fast-growing firm, including the culture, platform, flexibility and opportunity to have a more varied practice.
AXS Law, which moved into the Wynwood neighborhood of Miami about six months ago, now has 10 lawyers, and half of them were previously at Bilzin. A representative for the firm said it plans to double in size within the next two years. The firm’s philosophy is to avoid using titles, but both new attorneys have joined at the partner level.
“I’ve always had a dream of being at a firm that I could build from the ground up,” said Rose, who said he wanted to help shape a firm. “This place was so close to the beginning that it almost feels like it is me starting on my own.”
Rose, who was an associate at Bilzin, focuses his practice on complex commercial disputes and litigation matters. His work has included million-dollar, high-stakes complex litigation cases and dispute resolution and litigation matters, including trade secrets, partnership and breach of fiduciary duty cases, consumer finance and real estate disputes.
Narula, who was of counsel at Bilzin, said the platform provides him the flexibility to have a more varied practice and offer different types of fee arrangements. Narula, a former public defender, said he can now offer to work on a contingency fee, and while he can do many of the same civil cases, he can also explore his interest in criminal defense work.
“We all left Big Law because we were looking for something more personally rewarding,” Narula said. “What’s special about this firm is that we are all young, successful attorneys. We all have a sophisticated practice.”
At Bilzin, Narula’s practice concentrated on business litigation. He said he has brought along some of his clients at mortgage lending companies, construction firms, and freight forwarding companies.
AXS Law founding partner Jeremy Ben-David said the two former Bilzin attorneys are a strong addition to the firm. “Their deep understanding and proven track record in high-stakes complex litigation will contribute greatly to the knowledge base the firm is already known for,” he said.
Ben-David was most recently corporate counsel at Bayview Financial. But before that, he, too, was at Bilzin, as were Jeff Gutchess, who leads the AXS trial and litigation teams, and litigator Daniel Tropin.
