Kelly Ruane Melchiondo melded her legal training and experience with her love of the arts.
The litigation shareholder at Stearns Weaver Miller Weissler Alhadeff & Sittterson serves on the board that oversees programming for City Theatre, a nonprofit professional company that produces plays including the annual Summer Shorts festival in Miami.
Her efforts on behalf of the theater include organizing the continuing legal education portion of CityWrights, an annual conference for playwrights featuring panel sessions and course materials. Entertainment attorneys earn continying legal education credits, and artists learn how to protect their copyrights.
She also is a member of Volunteer Lawyers for the Arts, and has spoken as a panelist on how to get young lawyers involved with charities and cultural organizations.
Melchiondo, 36, who is based in the firm’s Miami office, focuses her legal practice on contract, business torts and appellate litigation and professional malpractice defense.
Recently she represented the Miami Heat organization in protracted litigation over construction issues at the American Airlines Arena, and a wealthy investor in a dispute with partners over a Miami hotel project.
Melchiondo is committed to raising money for cancer research. She has run many half-marathons to benefit the American Cancer Society and for the past two years has participated in a marathon to raise money for the Dana Farber Cancer Center in Boston.
