Former Miami Heat star Rony Seikaly has sold a custom-built Miami Beach mansion to a wireless industry mogul for $11.5 million.
Seikaly, the Heat’s first-ever draft pick turned popular disc jockey, sold the waterfront home in Miami Beach’s exclusive North Bay Road neighborhood on Dec. 8, according to Miami-Dade County records. He had paid $2.15 million for the 0.6-acre 2060 N. Bay Road property in April 2002, tore down the existing home and constructed a nine-bedroom, 10-bathroom mansion in 2005.
Messages left with a spokesman for Seikaly were not returned.
The buyer is a Miami company operating as MCL Real Estate, according to Miami-Dade records. MCL Real Estate is managed by Raul M. Claure of Miami, according to state corporate records. Claure is the founder, chairman and CEO of Miami-based wireless industry giant Brightstar.
Messages left for Claure were not returned.
Seikaly, 45, has found post-basketball success as a disc jockey performing at night clubs in South Beach and throughout the world. He was featured in the New York Times earlier this month for his success in the music industry.
At Syracuse University, Seikaly led the Orange to the national championship game in 1987. He spent 6 of 11 National Basketball Association seasons with the Heat, who drafted Seikaly with their first pick in franchise history.
Calls to Miami attorney Robert Adams, who prepared the deed, were not returned.
Seikaly did not publicly market the mansion but had been privately showing it to potential buyers for the past six months, according to broker Nelson Gonzalez, senior vice president at Esslinger-Wooten-Maxwell. Gonzalez, who was the listing agent when Seikaly purchased the property in 2002, said he was one of several brokers giving tours of the mansion.
Seikaly originally sought about $15 million for the home, Gonzalez said.
Despite the sale, Seikaly is not expected to leave Miami Beach, where he has been a resident for nearly two decades, Gonzalez said.
In a separately recorded transaction, Claure transferred the deed to a four-bedroom condominium at the Murano Grande tower at 400 Alton Road to Seikaly for a consideration of $2.5 million, according to Miami-Dade records.
Seikaly “will definitely stay here,” Gonzalez said. “He likes it here. This was the third or fourth property he’s owned on the beach.”
The North Bay Road neighborhood has been a hotbed of high-profile sales activity as of late.
“North Bay Road has always outperformed every other waterfront neighborhood in Miami Beach,” according to broker Kevin Tomlinson, vice president at One Sotheby’s International Realty. Tomlinson was not involved in the Seikaly sale.
“Celebrities, sports stars and CEOs are willing to give up gated communities or neighborhoods for North Bay Road,” Tomlinson said. “It’s the Rolls Royce of our neighborhoods.”
Two members of the Heat’s Big 3, Dwyane Wade and Chris Bosh, recently bought mansions in the area. Wade paid $10.65 million for a six-bedroom home on Nov. 29. Bosh paid $12.5 million for a seven-bedroom residence a few blocks away in September.
North Bay Road “has been an attractive place to purchase this year, with about 12 total” transactions, Gonzalez said. “There have been some very high sales, but also a lot of sales on the low end [for the neighborhood]. Now we’re moving up to the next level, as what could have been bought low is no longer available.”
Gonzalez is marketing a seven-bedroom mansion once owned by singer and actress Jennifer Lopez at 5800 N. Bay Road. The asking price is $29 million.
Other celebrities who own homes in the North Bay Road neighborhood include fashion entrepreneur Calvin Klein, actor Matt Damon and singer Ricky Martin. Baseball superstar Alex Rodriguez is building a mansion on North Bay Road land he bought in May for $7.4 million.
