Lawyers for former President Donald Trump are asking a federal judge to deny E. Jean Carroll’s motion to amend her pending defamation lawsuit against Trump—arguing their client could not have defamed Carroll by denying the rape because a jury only found him liable of sexually abusing her.

Trump attorneys Alina Habba and Michael T. Madaio told U.S. District Judge Lewis Kaplan of the Southern District of New York that because a civil jury last month rejected Carroll’s rape claim, Carroll’s other defamation claim cannot stand.
