The importance of demystifying cryptocurrency was the overriding theme of the Legal Services of Greater Miami's latest business panel. The event, hosted by Greenberg Traurig at its Miami office, zeroed in on the opportunities and challenges of the digital currency, particularly for small businesses and low-income households. Panelists agreed cryptocurrency will become increasingly important to national and local economies, according to a post-event press release. That means it's crucial to educate South Florida communities about cryptocurrency so they're in the best position to understand its implications for financial transactions, according to Legal Services. "Many in our community are participating in the growing cryptocurrency marketplace, and it is important to have these conversations to bring awareness and ensure the overall economic stability of families, small businesses and our community are protected in this new environment," said Legal Services executive director Monica Vigues-Pitan. Panel members included Francesca de Quesada Covey, tech innovation adviser for Miami-Dade County and partner at Miami venture capital company TheVentureCity, and Alpen Sheth, Ph.D., senior principal and head of policy & research at Borderless Capital, a blockchain and venture capital firm. "Financial literacy is crucial to empowering our community to make financial decisions in this increasingly complex and evolving environment," the press release said. "To that end, both Dr. Sheth and Ms. De Quesada Covey are engaged in projects that aim to educate the community about cryptocurrency, as well as make it more accessible." The moderator was Matt Haggman, executive vice president of Opportunity Miami and Miami-Dade Beacon Council. As a non-profit law firm, Legal Services aims to remove legal barriers to economic prosperity and achieve a more just and equitable community. The organization also announced it's accepting tax-deductible, cryptocurrency donations for low-income families in partnership with The Giving Block.
