The real estate industry is not doing enough to expand opportunities for people of color, according to the CEO of a luxury hotel company who spoke at the University of Miami’s 10th annual Real Estate Impact Conference at its Coral Gables campus Friday.

Sheila Johnson is CEO of Salamander Hotels & Resorts, which has locations in Palm Harbor, Florida, Charleston, South Carolina, Middleberg, Virginia and Montego Bay, Jamaica. She challenged the real estate industry to hire more people of color for reasons other than checking off a diversity box.
