I don’t believe in New Year’s resolutions. “New year, new you” does not work because we simply cannot change our core nature with a flip of the calendar. Instead, at the beginning of each year, I like to choose a theme on which to focus my energy and efforts, and something flexible enough that I can feel successful though the peaks and valleys of the next 12 months.

For example, my theme for 2020 was organization—organizing myself and my work habits, and where I could, organizing my kids and my house. It was a prescient and useful focus in a year marked by absolute chaos. And last year my focus was finding balance.
