If you’ve ever wondered who made Miami’s first automatic phone call, then wonder no more. It was Frank B. Shutts, co-founder of commercial law firm Shutts & Bowen, calling his house to make sure the new phone system worked.

That’s because Shutts was president of the South Atlantic Telephone & Telegraph Co., which eventually became AT&T, and his mission was to modernize Miami’s communication services by moving away from the switchboard and creating its first telephone dial service.
