The decision to shut down Manhattan’s Metropolitan Correctional Center will place additional strain on Brooklyn’s Metropolitan Detention Center, which was already struggling with staffing shortages and physical plant issues, advocates made clear Friday.

Deirdre von Dornum, attorney-in-charge of the Federal Defenders for the Eastern District of New York, said her understanding is that MCC will be shut down by early October. More than 200 people remaining in the MCC are expected to be transferred to the MDC. The closure may be temporary, according to a statement from the Department of Justice that did not describe an official timeline.
