While Philadelphia-based lawyer Michael van der Veen faced criticism for taking on former President Donald Trump as a client earlier this year, he said it also brought more attention to his business. Now he is representing a South Florida man alleged to have conspired with other Oath Keepers to take part in the Jan. 6 Capitol riots in what he calls an “important case.”

“The importance of this case is that the government, with broad strokes, is trying to overcharge and over-punish people that were there that day,” van der Veen said.
