U.S. Attorney General William Barr replaced the acting head of the U.S. Bureau of Prisons and a deputy amid the growing fallout over the death of wealthy financier and convicted sex offender Jeffrey Epstein in federal custody.

A statement from Barr issued Monday said Kathleen Hawk Sawyer, a psychologist who led the BOP from 1992 to 2003, would replace Hugh J. Hurwitz as director, and Thomas R. Kane will serve as her deputy.
