Greenberg Traurig has recruited former Sidley Austin partner Joel Rothstein as a shareholder and chair of the Miami-based firm’s Asia real estate practice.
Rothstein will first be based in New York and later relocate to Tokyo; he’s also expected to spend time in the Shanghai and Seoul offices.
Rothstein advises on real estate debt, equity and capital markets transactions across Asia, particularly Japan, China and Korea. In 2016, he advised China Merchants Bank on financing a $4.4 billion privatization of then-Hong Kong-listed developer Dalian Wanda Commercial Properties Co.
Rothstein joins from Sidley Austin’s Hong Kong office and spent time in the firm’s Los Angeles office. Before moving to Sidley in 2015, he was a longtime Paul Hastings partner, where he led the firm’s Asia real estate practice. He first joined Paul Hastings in 1992 and was named chair of the firm’s Beijing office in 2013.
Greenberg Traurig has 30 lawyers across offices in Shanghai, Tokyo and Seoul, according to its website.
