One killing spree after another; a deranged gunman opens fire at a school, a lunatic shoots patrons in a movie theater, on a college campus one student kills others or wherever a group of obliging victims can be found a maniac decides to murder perfect strangers for some often unknown, unfathomable reason. We record the casualty list and play the numbers on the news like a Powerball pick, the gunman is killed, commits suicide or is apprehended, the politicians express their horror and serve up the same old platitudes and the gun lobby runs to man its Second Amendment ramparts.
It is numbing. Worse than that, it is stupid and represents a national moral failure that is almost criminal.
