A leading attorney in the mergers and acquisitions and the private equity field has moved his practice from a 300-plus attorney international law firm to a Stamford firm with 11 lawyers.

John Capetta had started his career at Kelley Drye & Warren, working his way up to the role as chair of the firm’s Private Equity Practice Group. Now he’s shifting to Martin LLP in Stamford, where he will lead that firm’s Private Practice Equity Group.

“We are pleased to have John joining us,” Christopher Martin, managing partner at Martin LLP said in a prepared statement. “John’s more than 20 years focused exclusively in the private equity space will further strengthen our growing corporate practice. It is an exciting time for our firm as we continue to expand.”

In all, Capetta has 34 years of experience in the area of mergers and acquisitions, including the representation of financial and strategic buyers, sellers (entities and individuals), and management in public and private acquisitions and divestitures and joint ventures. He has represented a wide range of private equity firms, portfolio companies and portfolio company management, most notably Credit Suisse Private Equity, DLJ Merchant Banking Partners, Tailwind Capital Partners and Warburg Pincus.

A University of Connecticut School of Law graduate, he worked in Kelley Drye’s Stamford office.

“I am pleased to be joining Martin LLP,” Capetta said, “and to increasing the firm’s [private equity] presence with the support and encouragement of the attorneys there. Kelley Drye has been a terrific home to me and a setting in which I was able to help build a high quality, high touch PE practice, and I plan to continue to work with many of the great lawyers there with whom I have worked over the last 34 years, as a supplement to the attorney resources I will have access to at Martin LLP.”
