I was reminded today of why I write this column. As you have doubtless read in endless variation, I do it not to make you laugh, but to lighten up my own miserable existence. The practice of law is summarily cheerless. There are lawyer jokes, but they are to make the general populace laugh, not us; these jokes are at our expense. They exacerbate the stereotypical conception of the sleazy, dollar-hungry grinds we are all believed to be.

A recent report on one of my columns came from a friend who was mentioned in the text, He said that that on a scale of one to 10 it was "Very Silly Indeed." This was high praise. I celebrated with chocolate. But back to the reason for my epiphany.
