Just like everyone in our state, I was horrified by the cold-blooded shooting at the Sandy Hook Elementary School. The pain we feel for the community of Newtown is overwhelming, and we continue to keep the families of those who lost loved ones in our thoughts and prayers. We must also look ahead to make sure that such an unthinkable act of violence does not ever happen again.

As the country continues to follow the aftermath of the tragic shooting, tighter gun control laws will be a national issue. Here in Connecticut, everything has to be on the table for discussion, from guns to mental health issues and school safety. When the General Assembly convenes this month, the Judiciary Committee will review proposals that aim to expand the definition of assault weapons, ban high-capacity ammunition magazines and regulate ammunition sales among other measures.
